Stone Lantern is a greater Seattle-area performing musical duo formed by singer/songwriter John Wright and guitarist/producer Adam Puchalski. The musical collaboration was originally conceived in the autumn of 2007 when John was searching for the right person to help in recording and production of his original songs for what would become the disc “You Can’t Go Home”. The two partners were introduced by their mutual friend Dan Kirk of Kirkland, WA. and work began on the songs at Adam’s Windstudio recording facility in Bellevue, WA. Work on the disc continued through 2008 until it’s publication in 2009.
“It’s really easy for me to work with Adam” says John. “I quickly got the feeling that he genuinely liked my songs, and he is such an accomplished writer, musician, engineer and producer that the beautiful parts he played on the recordings seemed to appear almost by magic”.
“We naturally seem to work by encouraging each other and through positive feedback” says Adam. “Even though we came up about 12 years apart, we share a lot of the same musical preferences and our differences are often complimentary. We both try to stay open to different ideas”.
John was raised in a musical family and when popular music was everywhere on the radio in the Nineteen Sixties and Seventies. Music and poetry were important parts of his family life, his father teaching literature and languages in his high school while his mother played piano and sang at home. The kids were required to play a musical instrument in the school orchestra and the family sang from the Fireside Book of Folk Songs and read poetry aloud while gathered around the piano at night.
Adam is a gifted guitarist and composer with the ability to play a beautiful melody on nearly any stringed instrument. He is the son of Igon Puchalski, the well-known Seattle-area pianist. Although he was not required to follow in his father’s footsteps, Adam began playing guitar in grade school of his own accord. By the time he was in High School he was giving solo electric guitar performances in local halls and churches. Surviving recordings show how accomplished he had already become at this early age. One can hear the background professional influence of Igon, a successful working musician all of his life, in the high quality of Adam’s music and productions at Windstudio.
Both John and Adam have played in bands and written and recorded songs their whole lives. Both formed bands with their friends in high school and in the young-adult years afterwards. An important similar trait they shared is that they both wrote and performed their own compositions in these early bands. This creativity is the lifeblood of the art that continues today with Stone Lantern at Windstudio.
“Doing something you love is even more rewarding when you do it with your friends!”
